How to Play Crosswordle 9×9

Crosswordle 9×9 uses the same swap-based mechanics as the classic 7×7—but on a larger grid with more intersecting words to solve. All letters are visible from the start; your job is to swap them into the correct positions using color clues before you run out of moves.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Read the grid. Look at the 9×9 board of intersecting words. Every letter is visible but out of place.
  2. Use color clues. Green letters are already correct. Yellow letters belong in that word but need to move. Grey letters belong in a different word.
  3. Tap a letter to select it. It turns blue. Tap a second letter to swap their positions. Each swap costs one move.
  4. Work from certainty. Start with the word that has the most green letters, then solve outward as more positions lock in.
  5. Solve before running out of swaps. Every 9×9 puzzle can be completed with 6 swaps remaining—achieving that earns a perfect six-star score.

Why Practice on the 9×9 Grid?

The 9×9 grid cranks up every aspect of the puzzle compared to the classic 7×7:

  • Longer, more complex words to solve
  • More letter intersections across the grid
  • Higher swap count but tighter margin for error
  • 5–12 minute solve times for a deeper challenge

Unlimited 9×9 Mode is the risk-free way to master all of this:

  • No streak pressure. Your daily 9×9 streak stays safe no matter how many practice puzzles you lose.
  • Endless puzzles. Every game is randomly generated—you'll never run out.
  • Build 9×9 skills. The bigger grid rewards different strategies than the 7×7. Practice helps you internalize them.
  • No account required. Play instantly in any browser with no download or signup.

Unlimited 9×9 Training Tips

Don't Be Afraid to Make Mistakes

That's the whole point of Unlimited Mode. Your results don't affect your streaks or leaderboard scores, so experiment freely. Try risky swaps, test new strategies, and learn from every loss.

Practice Longer Words

The 9×9 grid uses longer words that can be harder to identify, especially when most of the row or column is grey. Use Unlimited Mode to build your vocabulary recognition—the more puzzles you solve, the faster you'll spot word patterns.

Master Swap Efficiency

The 9×9 grid gives you more swaps, but the perfect score is still six stars. Focus on finding swaps where both letters land in their correct positions—doubling your progress in one move. For a complete walkthrough, see our Crosswordle strategy guide and 7 proven tips to boost your win streak.
