There aren't many daily logic word games out there that offer unlimited play for free. In fact, you can think of it right now, and you could probably count on one hand the word games you know that have this kind of feature (no, archives don't count, those are different).

Fortunately, Crosswordle—the ideal combination of crossword and Wordle®—is one of the proud few that has a truly free, unlimited word puzzle experience.

What is Unlimited Mode?

Unlimited Mode is a completely free practice feature where you can play an unlimited number of Crosswordle puzzles.

Intended to be a fun, limitless way to sharpen a Crosswordler's skill and understanding of the puzzle, it's also the go-to mode for everyone looking for more puzzles to play after they finish their daily run.

For the more dedicated players, it's also where they polish their Crosswordling, improving their overall speed and finding the most efficient way to get a perfect score.

How to play Crosswordle

Need a quick guide on how to play the game? Here's how:

Your goal is to swap letters around until all of them turn green and form the correct words! But be careful—you can’t just randomly move everything around, as you have a limited number of swaps. So you'll have to think of the words you're going to form while also keeping your swap stock in mind.

🟩 Green letters are already in the correct position and don’t need to be moved—they serve as your main clue for solving each word.

🟨 Yellow letters are in the correct horizontal or vertical word, but they’re currently in the wrong spot. You'll need to move them around until they land in the right position and turn green.

Gray letters are not in the correct spot at all. Change directions and try swapping the gray letters into the correct horizontal or vertical words so they can eventually turn green.

To swap letters, click or tap on the one you want to move, then select the next letter you want to switch it with. The selected tile/letter will turn white to indicate it’s active. If you change your mind, click it again to deselect and reset it to its original color.

You’ll automatically win once all the words are correct—just make sure you finish before you run out of swaps!

Benefits of Practice Mode

There are many reasons why you should play Practice Mode first:

  • Learn without pressure. Practice makes perfect! In Practice Mode, you can make all the mistakes you need in order to learn.

  • Play an infinite number of random puzzles. Practice Mode offers an unlimited number of puzzles you can play around with and polish your Crosswordling skills.

  • Don't lose your streak. This mode doesn't count towards your Daily Mode record, so even if you mess up, the score you're trying to maintain won't get affected.

  • Getting familiar with colorblind mode. Colorblind mode is only available to registered account users. But if you're one and need to get used to the different colors, Practice Mode can really help.

  • Learn to get a perfect score. Getting six stars, the perfect score, is the top-level way of playing Crosswordle, as every puzzle is designed to leave you with a maximum of six swaps left. It requires the ideal combination of vocab, logic and sequencing.

Unlimited vs. Archive

Most people tend to think, "What's the difference between unlimited mode and archive? Isn't it just the same as we get to play as many puzzles as we want?"

While it is true that both modes offer a lot of puzzles to play, there are key differences between them, especially when it comes to puzzle games like Crosswordle:

  • An archive is a collection of previous daily puzzles. This means that it is a collection of previously released puzzles, and it is finite. So if you're playing a relatively young puzzle game, you'll immediately run out of games to play.

  • Unlimited mode is limitless. Unlike an archive, unlimited modes follow an algorithm that generates a random puzzle based on your preferences, and it is highly unlikely you will end up with a duplicate game. So even if you wanted to solve a thousand puzzles in a go, you won't run out.

3 Training Drills

  1. Swap-map warm-up – Clear the shortest word first

  2. Look for perfect swaps – Both letter tiles must turn green after each guess

  3. Perfect-score challenge – Leave six swaps every time

Best-Practice Tips

There are many ways to improve your Crosswordling skills! Here are some general tips to help you on your way to becoming a better puzzle solver:

  • Targeting: Target rows and columns that you are confident in answering. Choose ones that have the most green cells, as these are already in the correct positions. Each of the selected words in the puzzle have a certain level of difficulty in getting to them, so target wisely!

  • Swapping: Swapping is the most difficult part of Crosswordle. Always mind your swap count and only begin guessing via swapping when you have a solid lead on a word you're targeting. If you're aiming for a perfect run, one wrong positioning move can lead to more wasted swaps after each guess, so be careful!
